A 53-year-old man died while he was being treated at a hospital Monday after he had been transported from Vista Detention Facility, marking the seventh person to die while in the Sheriff’s Department custody this year.
The man died after he was found in medical distress while deputies were conducting a safety check inside a housing module at the jail around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Lt. Scott Roller said in a news release. The deputies notified medical staff who determined he needed to be taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery, Roller said.His name was not immediately released pending notification of his family. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Roller said the man had been arrested June 13 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon by Oceanside police. At the time of his arrest, the man was believed to be homeless. The Sheriff’s Department said the jail death is now being investigated by its homicide division, as are all jail deaths. It also is being reviewed by the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the county’s civilian oversight body.In 2021, state officials released an audit reporting that 185 people died in Sheriff’s Department jail custody between 2006 and 2020 — the highest death rate among large California counties.
