A young man killed himself after he shot and killed his father and his 12-year-old brother on Easter Sunday in a home on Jacksonville’s Westside, police said.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said JSO learned about what happened when the mother of the suspected shooter, who was shot several times, was found by neighbors at the entrance of the Duclay neighborhood street where they lived.Coarsey said the suspected shooter, a 22-year-old biracial man, was using racial slurs that his white father did not like and that sparked an argument.

The 22-year-old then went upstairs, got a gun and put on “some type of tactical vest,” gloves and a mask. He then came downstairs around 4:30 p.m. and shot and killed his 45-year-old father, Coarsey said. He then shot and killed his young brother before turning the gun on his mother who was able to escape with her life.

Two teens, who are also related to the mother and father, were inside the house at the time of the shooting, Coarsey said, but they were able to hide until officers rescued them.Two guns were found inside the house, Coarsey said, including a “long gun” and a handgun. “The family gave some history of some possible mental health issues,” Coarsey said. “JSO has not had any mental health issue contacts with him but the family said that he has had some.”The mother, who is Black, was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery.Digital reporter who has lived in Jacksonville for more than 25 years and focuses on important local issues like education and the environment.
