A man hikes out onto the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park on July 8, where temperatures were as high as 125 degrees. DEATH VALLEY, California — A man had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital after he severely burned his feet on the ground at Death Valley when he lost his shoes.from the National Parks Service says it was about 123 degrees Saturday when the 42-year-old man, a Belgium resident, was rescued from the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley.
The man’s family members called for help and other people at the park carried the man to a parking lot. Rangers determined the man needed to be taken to a hospital, but it was unsafe for a helicopter to land safely because of the extreme temperatures, which reduce rotor lift. The man was taken by ambulance to a higher elevation where the temperature was 109 degrees. A helicopter was then able to fly the man to University Medical Center in Las Vegas.Park rangers at Death Valley recommend visitors stay within a 10-minute walk of an air-conditioned vehicle and not go out after 10 a.m.
