Police have issued an update following a Mercedes crash into Marine Lake in Southport . The silver car collided with barriers at the lake around 3:50 am on Saturday, February 1st. Officers had observed the vehicle traveling at excessive speed five minutes earlier on High Park Place. The impact caused damage to the bandstand, and the car ended up partially submerged.

A search operation, involving the Coastguard, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, and the National Police Air Service helicopter, was unable to locate the driver, who is believed to have fled the scene. A 29-year-old man from Southport was later arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, perverting the course of justice, and drink driving. In an update released on February 3rd, a police spokesperson confirmed that he has been released under investigation pending further inquiries. Albany Road and Southport Promenade were temporarily closed while emergency services responded to the incident. The car was subsequently recovered from the lake, drawing the attention of many onlookers.
