A car has plunged off a cliff into Victorian bushland, trapping a young man in the wreckage for about 10 hours. The vehicle went off the Mountain Hwy in Sassafras, flipped several times and landed on its roof in dense bushland about 50m below at 9pm on Tuesday The 26-year-old driver was injured and unable to move and could not find his phone to be able to call for help.
Firefighters, paramedics and police rushed to the scene but the crash site was obscured by trees which made it difficult to locate the car. “It’s approximately an 80m drop from Mountain Hwy above, it’s probably on a 45 degree or so angle,” CFA member Catherine Hunter said. After about 10 hours trapped, the driver was rescued at 8.30am and loaded into a helicopter to be airlifted to hospital. He has serious upper and lower body injuries and is believed to be in a stable condition.
