Gilberto Jardin says ‘British Gas has ruined his life and his destroyed his credit score’
A man who battled to stay in the UK after being threatened with deportation says an unpaid energy bill has left him suicidal.
Gilberto fled the island of Madeira in 2004 and moved to the UK after an armed robber shot him in the pelvis. In 2021, he fought to prevent the Home Office from deporting him after two short bouts in prison for harassment and motoring offences led the officials to strip him of his status - and prevented him from working or claiming benefits. This left Gilberto unable to afford to pay rent or bills, he explained.
Gilberto says the debt has "destroyed his mental health" and made him “depressed and suicidal”. He added: “It’s destroyed my credit score - it’s gone from 750 to zero. I can’t even open a bank account, or take out a monthly phone contract because of their mistake. A spokesperson for British Gas said: “We're sorry to hear about Mr Jardin's difficult circumstances and we are getting in touch to see how we can help. He was moved over to British Gas in November 2020 after his previous energy supplier went into administration and that included the transfer of a large unpaid balance already outstanding.
