A man was seriously injured when he was dragged into a threading machine at a factory in Melbourne’s west. The worker was threading a steel bar at Nexsa’s Sunshine North factory in July 2022 when his sleeve became caught and he was dragged into the machine, which was operating at its maximum speed of 100 RPM. He was flipped over the machine onto the floor and his arm was twisted backwards around the steel bar.

Nexsa was last week fined $50,000 after pleading guilty to failing to provide or maintain plant that was safe and without risks to health. The sentencing came after a WorkSafe Victoria investigation found the machine was one of five items at the workplace that were not fitted with guarding to prevent access to the rotating parts. WorkSafe found Nexsa should have reduced the risk to workers by installing interlocked guarding to cover the machine’s moving parts.
