A man stabbed a convicted sex offender to death in bloody attack before being knocked down and killed as he escaped, it emerged last night.
Sources say Hamill, aged 37 inflicted several knife wounds on Mooney who had spent five years in prison after he was convicted of multiple charges of sexual assault in 2003.Gardai investigating the incidents in Broomfield near Castleblayney believe Hamill ran away from the scene of the murder but was struck by a car as he walked on a quiet road back towards Culloville, just over the border in Co Armagh.
It is also understood that police believe Hamill's death was an accident and that he didn't intentionally jump in front of the vehicle.Sources say Hamill was disturbed during the attack by a relative of Mooney and then fled the scene on foot.
