Man Utd appointed Christopher Vivell as interim director of recruitment in July and had an impact in his first transfer window at the club.
For the second summer in a row, Manchester United didn't spend a transfer fee on a player older than 27 as they look to pivot towards a strategy that focuses on those either in their prime or yet to hit their highest level.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear he views recruitment as the biggest opportunity to improve United and that he wants to sign the next superstar, rather than spend millions on players who might already have their best years behind them. Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Casemiro all fitted into that bracket in recent seasons.
Vivell, still only 37, made his name within the Red Bull network and many of his transfer successes both for RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig are names now familiar to a global audience. He came in with a reputation for spotting emerging talent and his biggest move in his first summer at Old Trafford was to play a pivotal role in the addition of Sekou Kone for just over £1m.
United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth is understood to be an admirer of the Red Bull network and they have certainly developed a reputation as shrewd operators in the transfer market in recent years. Vivell was heavily involved in that, as was United's former caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick.
