That really would have been a slap in the face for the 30-year-old whose fall down the pecking order at United has been accelerated over the last 12 months. Maguire wanted to stay this summer, despite an offer from West Ham, and while his desire and determination to fight for his place can perhaps be applauded, United are now stuck paying a huge salary to a squad player they are desperate to cash in on.
