Man Utd returned to winning ways in the Premier League by beating Everton 2-0 via penalties from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
This was the kind of football match that will have been forgotten by Saturday afternoon. In fact, if you're reading this you probably already need reminding of the broad details.
United relied on a moment of pure magic to score a goal at the Etihad last week. Rashford's stunning strike had an xG of 0.03, which tells you how likely – or unlikely – it was to end up in the back of the net. That was a difficult game to judge a new-look attack on, but there was the odd moment in the first half when they threatened on the break. They just failed to capitalise on them.
For all the criticism he can sometimes get for his demeanour on the pitch and his regular complaints, there is no questioning the Portuguese's passion. If anything he cares too much, a point hinted at by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week. There is a strong argument he remains United's best player, however.
Fernandes also forced Pickford into a superb save from a free-kick and his influence in attacking moves grew as the game went on. He began to drop deep, adding ballast to the midfield but also getting on the ball in that false nine position, with Garnacho and Rashford making runs from wide.
