The 28-year-old midfielder has reportedly been offered to Man United who are said to be considering a surprise late move.
The final week of the transfer window was always bound to throw up a few surprises but news of Manchester United's reported interest in Pierre-Emile Højbjerg certainly came out of the blue.
Sofyan Amrabat had long been touted as the prime midfield target at United, while consideration was being given to a late move for Ryan Gravenberch. Both were known by Ten Hag, having played under the Dutchman at FC Utrecht and Ajax respectively, and that pattern might explain late links to Højbjerg. Before making his name in England with Southampton, Højbjerg got his breakthrough in senior football with Bayern Munich.
"That boy really could have made our team stronger. Financially we would have made it out, I think. He could also go to other clubs, but wanted to come to Ajax. But then Tottenham came before him and we still got the short straw." Since his arrival as manager last season, Ten Hag has signed Antony and Lisandro Martinez from former club Ajax, while Andre Onana - signed from Inter Milan this summer - had been with him in Amsterdam. Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst caught the manager's eye during his time in the Netherlands.
