Man use wheelie bins to block man ‘who tried to abduct a baby’

An abducted baby was saved after a witness created a road-block with wheelie bins and his own car to try and stop the suspect.

A manhunt was launched last night after a five-month-old baby boy was taken from his mother, with officers looking for suspect James Dempsey, 35, who was driving a Vauxhall Astra. Police received two crucial calls which helped them track the car including one from the man who was praised by detectives for blocking off a road with his neighbours’ bins after seeing the Vauxhall parked by some nearby garages.Traffic cops arrived at the scene and saw the car making off before stopping it near Birmingham airport and finding the baby unharmed.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of child abduction and remained in police custody this morning for questioning. Chief Inspector Ian Ingram, of West Midlands Police, said: ‘It was a fantastic response to what was a very serious, urgent appeal for information.‘Our appeal was shared thousands of times and would have reached a huge number of people in the West Midlands and beyond.
