Man Utd are signing a new midfielder and selling a stalwart of their team as the overhaul of the squad under Erik ten Hag continues at pace.
As one new face arrived at Carrington, another was saying an emotional goodbye. Manuel Ugarte has had eyes only for Manchester United throughout this summer window, but to make room for his arrival United had to end a relationship that has sustained for 22 years.
Even now, his departure is partly being forced by the Premier League's spending rules, which incentivise selling academy graduates. That made Napoli's £25m bid appealing when United were looking to raise funds to sign Ugarte for an initial £42.3m. Of those, two more could have gone during this window and one may still do. United had planned to sell Victor Lindelof but for a toe injury to put paid to that and he will be utilised as defensive cover in the final year of his contract.
Ten Hag would surely benefit from Sancho leaving. He would have no questions about the professionalism and commitment of Lindelof to get through a season as a bit-part player, but we already know he will have concerns about Sancho's ability and desire to adapt to a minor role. Luke Shaw would return to the team if he can stay fit enough for long enough, while Bruno Fernandes is clearly the most important of those players from the pre-Ten Hag era. Rashford has a fight on his hands to keep his place on the team.
