The 37-year old admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm

A Co Antrim man who bit another man's nose during a drink-fuelled fight in a hotel following a family funeral avoided being sent to jail today .

On that date, both Cosgrove and the injured party had attended a family funeral. Following the funeral, the mourners went to the Dunadry Hotel where alcohol was consumed. Saying that if Cosgrove "could turn the clock back he would", Mr Mullan said it was accepted that his client was initially defending himself but "crossed the line" when he bit the other man's nose.

He added that during the grapple between the two men, Cosgrove was "entitled to take steps to defend himself" but "decided to use his mouth as a weapon" which "went beyond" reasonable self-defence and "strayed into criminality."
