Dennis Thornton, 43, of Leander died after he struggled with officers and was shocked with a Taser, police officials say.

SAN MARCOS — The Leander man who died while in San Marcos Police Department custody Tuesday had a nearly 108-degree body temperature, and his girlfriend told police he had consumed alcohol and drugs, Police Chief Stan Standridge said. Officers approached Dennis Thornton on the Interstate 35 median near Posey Road after multiple 911 callers reported him behaving erratically, Standridge said during a Thursday news conference.

'In a very short period of time, and for reasons that we will likely never know, Mr. Thornton suddenly turned and charged at the officer, and then he stopped as suddenly as he had started,' Standridge said. The officer ordered Thornton to the ground. When Thornton refused, the officer shocked him once with a Taser, Standridge said. Another officer arrived, and they tried to keep Thornton on the ground while he resisted, Standridge said.
