Wilmer Lalvay was a native of Ecuador and was living in Belleville
Wilmer Lalvay, 23, of Belleville, drowned May 4 off a beach near St. Clair Avenue in the Monmouth County town.
“My cousin came to this country to look for a better future and provide for his family in Ecuador,” a cousin wrote in Spanish onSpring Lake police said they were called to the area at about 2 p.m. that day for a swimmer in distress and found a man face down in the surf. Officers pulled him to shore, but he died shortly after at a nearby hospital.
The police department this week confirmed that victim was Lalvay, but also did not elaborate on the incident.
