The former England star's wife Stephanie said she found the voicemail 'very frightening'

The wife of former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton said the conviction of a man for threatening to break her husband's neck "sends a message" to internet trolls.

The comment was reported to police, and investigators identified Ledgerton, of Broxton Avenue, West Kirby, as the man who had left the message. He was charged with sending a malicious and threatening communication and pleaded guilty at Wirral Magistrates' Court. "When it happened I did find it really quite frightening, and I was worried for my husband's welfare because he is a public figure. My phone number was out there for work and so people with gambling addictions could contact me, but for a while I was frightened to answer the phone.

Mr Shilton is England men's team's most capped ever player, and was playing the day Argentina legend Diego Maradona scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal in the 1986 World Cup.
