Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, climbed into the castle grounds with the loaded crossbow on Christmas Day in 2021 to ‘kill the Queen’to the grounds of Windsor Castle to “kill” Queen Elizabeth II has been sentenced to nine years in prison, with a further five years on extended licence.in the UK since 1981. He pleaded guilty to the charge in February along with charges of making threats to kill and being in possession of an offensive weapon.
During the sentencing, Justice Nicholas Hilliard read an exchange that suggested that the chatbot served to “bolster and reinforce the defendant’s intentions”, according to a psychiatrist.Judge Hilliard said the most appropriate sentence is a “hybrid order” under the Mental Health Act, meaning he will stay infor the remainder of his psychiatric treatment, before being transferred to prison. He was admitted to the Berkshire hospital in February 2022.
It is not clear when he became psychotic, but the judge said: “The idea he had of killing the sovereign was not a product itself of mental illness, it predated that he conceived of killing the Queen.” The act was passed early in the reign of Queen Victoria after a number of assassination attempts against her. Under the previous 1351 Treason Act, all assaults against the monarch were punishable by death.
Marcus Sarjeant was the last person convicted under the 1842 Treason Act in 1981. He was jailed for five years after firing blank shots at the Queen while she was riding down The Mall in London during the Trooping the Colour parade.
