There will be three weekly flights to the Chinese city operated by Juneyao Air

Manchester Airport has announced the launch of a direct route to Shanghai, the first service to operate to the Chinese city from the north. Juneyao Air has chosen Manchester as its first destination in the UK in a move that’s been hailed as “fantastic news” by regional leaders.

Shanghai is China’s biggest city and its financial hub, with around 185,000 people from across the North already travelling there indirectly each year. Located on the country’s east coast, it’s often dubbed the ‘New York of China’ and it’s also home to the second biggest Disney theme park in the world.

Plans for the route were initially announced in 2019 but they were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Following discussions between Manchester Airport and Juneyao Air the service can now go ahead.
