Yellow weather warnings for snow, ice, and fog remain in place across the UK, causing disruption to road and rail services.
Manchester Airport has temporarily shut its runways after seeing ‘significant levels of snow’ as temperatures plummet and weather warnings remain in place. Yellow alerts for snow, ice and fog have been issued for today, after snow and sleet caused disruption yesterday. In an update this morning, Manchester Airport said in a statement: ‘Our runways are temporarily closed due to significant levels of snow, as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible.
’ It added that people should allow extra time to travel today. Road and rail services in the warning areas are expected to face problems again on Thursday, with forecasters also warning of the potential for ice in places. Motorists are also being urged to stick to major roads that are most likely to have been gritted. Car insurer RAC said it has seen the highest levels of demand for rescues in a three-day period since December 2022. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended its cold weather health alert for all of England until Sunday. Amber alerts have been extended and will now run until January 12, meaning a rise in deaths is likely.
