The Manchester Airport relief road remains closed after severe flooding in Greater Manchester on New Year's Day. The A555 is likely to be shut for another day, with other roads in the region also affected. Stockport Council is working to clear roads and assist residents, but warns of potential ice as temperatures drop.
The Manchester Airport relief road could remain closed for another day after devastating floods hit the region. New Year's Day has seen Greater Manchester under water in many areas, following heavy downpours overnight. The A555 relief road has been shut throughout the day, having been badly affected by the floods. Images from the scene show cars completely submerged on the road. Police were also called out to rescue people from a car in the early hours of the morning.
In an update, Stockport Council says the road will remain closed tonight. It also says the road is 'likely' to remain closed on Thursday (January 2). The A34 in Cheadle has also been closed due to floodwater on the road. Council chiefs say that water has now cleared - but stranded cars remain on the road, meaning it cannot reopen yet. Coun Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: 'Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during this challenging time. 'Teams are working around the clock alongside emergency services to assist those affected and to clear roads as quickly as possible. Please take care on the roads, avoid flooded areas, and travel cautiously. 'Thank you for your cooperation as we manage this ongoing situation.' Stockport has seen some of the most severe flooding incidents today. An evacuation has been taking place at Meadow Mill, after residents became trapped in their apartments due to flooding outside. Stockport Council says the water level has now dropped to a sufficient level to allow residents to walk out, while vulnerable residents and those with mobility issues were assisted to exit the building. A full sweep of affected roads is set to take place tonight and tomorrow, the council says. However, temperatures will drop tonight and tomorrow morning, and a Met Office warning for ice is in place. 'Priority routes' in Stockport will be gritted around Stockport from 7pm tonigh
