Much to the delight of cat lovers, Manchester Cat Cafe is set to reopen in the coming months after a four-year closure. The beloved cafe, known for its adorable feline residents and unique concept, will find a new home in Barton Arcade on Deansgate. The reopening marks a triumphant return for the cafe, which was forced to shut its doors in 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Owners Sarah and Ellie Close have shared their excitement about returning to Manchester, emphasizing their commitment to creating a bigger, stronger, and even better experience for their patrons.
Four years after closing its doors, Manchester Cat Cafe has confirmed it is reopening. The cafe will return to the city in the coming months, taking up a unit in a Barton Arcade on Deansgate. The news was teased on social media this morning, with owners telling followers 'we've missed you'. The post attracted hundreds of comments, with fans of the concept saying they 'can't wait' to visit the cafe when it reopens this year.
Manchester Cat Cafe was founded by sisters Ellie and Sarah Close in 2016 and was home to a variety of moggies that visitors could pay to spend time with. In 2021, they closed the original Norther Quarter site , telling customers they were 'truly heartbroken' but said the impact of coronavirus closures on the business gave them no choice but to permanently shut the High Street site. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, about the reopening , owners Sarah and Ellie said: “We can confirm that Cat Cafe Manchester will be returning this year, opening in Barton Arcade on Deansgate. The cafe will be taking the place of the old Classic Football Shirts unit. 'It’s taken us a long time to recover from the pandemic, like many small businesses, it hit us hard, and over the last four years a lot has changed. 'We’ve both become mothers, so we are currently juggling the business with small children. It’s taken perseverance, but we’ve finally managed to secure a new premises, and we’re hoping to return bigger, stronger and better than ever.” When the original venue closed in 2021, the cafe's owners said it has 'been an incredibly difficult decision to make', but at the time they couldn't afford to continue at the Northern Quarter spot. They did however hint that they hoped to reopen the concept at a new site in the future - so today's news will be music to the ears of cat lovers. The post teasing its return was met with hundreds of comments, with many congratulating Ellie and Sarah. One Facebook user wrote: 'Welcome back, you have been missed! Can’t wait to visit once you’re up and running.' Another wrote: 'I now have a very happy granddaughter. 3 generations can come this time.' A third added: 'Well, my daughter and I will be 100% there soon as you open!!! Omg, her face when she finally found you and I had to tell her you had closed was a sad day! And another commented: 'I cannot wait to come visit. What a great location and I wish you are your no doubt fantastic feline residents, every success!!!' The Cat Cafe also has a branch in Liverpool, and like its Manchester counterpart is led by a mission to make animal assisted therapy accessible to everyone. With the help of the 'cuddliest, loveliest feline friends', they aim to help people feel better whilst educating children and adults about the needs of the pets. At the Liverpool site, they allow entry to anyone over the age of 10 years old with specific hours for 4-9 year olds available on a daily basis. They have also created a community by hosting book clubs, cat yoga, movie nights, and sessions designed specifically for people with autism and special educational needs. Cat Cafe UK follows the traditional Japanese model. Instead of paying for food and drink, you pay for time. You book a slot for as long as you like, and all drinks are unlimited and free of charge
