Manchester City Centre transforms into a sea of red and gold for Chinese New Year celebrations. Join the festivities featuring a spectacular dragon parade, live music, cultural performances, delicious street food, and more.

Chinese New Year celebrations will kick off in Manchester City Centre this weekend as families and friends come together to continue their festivities for the Year of the Snake. Officially, Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival and Lunar New Year , took place on Wednesday (January 29), but the celebrations extend for several weeks. Manchester 's city centre has been adorned with vibrant red lanterns and decorations in anticipation of the main events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors to the city can expect a vibrant atmosphere filled with street food markets, captivating music and performances, and a range of family-friendly activities over the two days. One of the most eagerly awaited events is the dragon parade - a grand procession featuring a magnificent traditional dragon accompanied by acrobatic performances, dancers, and drummers. The dragon, a symbol of good luck, health, and strength in Chinese culture, is believed to ward off evil spirits and usher in prosperous times. The parade route begins at the junction of Oxford Street and George Street at 12pm on Sunday, February 2nd, winding its way along Portland Street before culminating in Chinatown with a final performance on Princess Street. An additional night dragon parade will take place in the Chinatown car park at 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, February 1st, while an illuminated dragon will grace the streets of Chinatown as part of the celebrations' conclusion from 6.30pm on February 2nd. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the weekend will also feature a food market showcasing snacks, street food, and meals from local vendors. On Saturday night, DJs will be spinning Cantonese and Mandarin pop songs starting at 8pm. The Guizhou Acrobatic Troupe will be performing awe-inspiring acts on Sunday (2.45pm and 3.45pm), further enriching the cultural experience. All events are free to attend and open to the public, but early arrival is recommended for the dragon parade to secure the best vantage points. Stage performances, the funfair, and food market will be open from 12pm until 8pm on both Saturday and Sunday (February 1st and 2nd). To facilitate the parade, several road closures will be in place over the weekend, including Oxford Street, Portland Street, and Princess Street. Accessible parking on Saturday, February 1st can be found on Fountain Street (Booth Street to York Street). Additionally, various bus services will be diverted between 9.30am and 3pm on Sunday, February 2nd
