Manchester city center will host a free fireworks extravaganza to welcome the New Year. The event, taking place in St Peter's Square, will accommodate 20,000 attendees and feature a display launched from the roof of Manchester Central Library.

A huge free fireworks bonanza is being organised for Manchester city centre to ring in the New Year in style. The New Year's Eve event will have capacity for 20,000 revellers to join the countdown to midnight in Manchester on Tuesday, December 31. Last year, Manchester Council brought back the free fireworks event for the first time in four years, to a new location at Castlefield Bowl.

Pre-Covid, the New Year countdown had always taken place at Albert Square with the spectacular backdrop of Manchester Town Hall, but ongoing works there means it remains out of action for 2024. But next week the fireworks event will have another new location - in the historic setting of St Peter's Square for the first time ever in the city centre. It will allow a huge crowd of 20,000 to join the outdoor celebrations, 10,000 more than last year. It will also set up a spectacular backdrop for the fireworks display - from the roof of Manchester Central Library wtih Big Santa lit up outside. It's the first time ever that fireworks have been let off from the roof of the iconic city centre building. Given the scale of the event, there will be no tram services through St Peter's Square from 8pm to end of service on Tuesday December 31. The New Year's Eve event will be family friendly, with no alcohol allowed. But council bosses have confirmed there will be a couple of stalls selling hot food and non-alcoholic drinks. The event will open from 10pm, and run through to 12.30am on Tuesday. Entrance will be on a first come, first served basis and once capacity is reached there will be no further entrance. There will be a live stage show, with radio presenter and DJ Joe McGrath hosting proceedings and leading the countdown to midnight. Anyone attending the free event is asked to limit any bags they bring with them to no bigger than A4 in size. Bag searches will be in operation at each of the multiple entrances into the event spac
