A new study has revealed Manchester’s Christmas Markets as the most affordable in the UK, beating out popular destinations like Birmingham, Edinburgh, and London’s Winter Wonderland. Researchers considered factors like hotel costs, price mentions in reviews, and social media popularity.

Manchester ’s Christmas Markets have been named the most affordable in the UK, according to a new study. A visit to the festive markets was found to be cheaper than cities across the country, including Birmingham and Edinburgh. The markets opened on November 8 and have enjoyed a six-week run, closing this weekend on Sunday, December 22. This year the markets were spread across nine locations in the city centre, including Piccadilly Gardens, King Street and St Anns Square.

Now the market has been named the most affordable in the country by research from credit card brand Aqua. The study looked at factors such as hotel costs, reviews that mention prices and overall popularity on social media. Researchers placed Manchester’s Christmas Market on top for the best affordable market in the UK. Compared to some markets like London’s Winter Wonderland, it is free to enter Manchester’s market, and no prior booking is required. The study found that just 36 of the 134 one to three-star reviews (27per cent) reference the words ‘overpriced’ or ‘expensive’, meaning the majority of poor reviews are not concerned about the market’s affordability. The market also appears to be one of the most popular, with an impressive 62,900 posts under #manchesterchristmasmarket on Instagram. Glasgow’s Winterfest took second place in the study, with cheap hotel prices in the city boosting its ranking. In third place is Holkham Hall in Norfolk, which offers a rather different experience as it’s only open for three days in December. At the bottom of the list is Winter Wonderland in London, which charges a £7.50 entry fee. Bath was also found to be expensive due to the high cost of an overnight hotel stay, coming in at around £508.72 on average for two adults.
