Manchester City midfielder Rodri has warned that players may go on strike over the increasing number of fixtures in football. The new Champions League format and Club World Cup will significantly increase the workload for players, pushing them beyond a sustainable level.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri suggested players striking over an expanding fixture schedule is a real possibility. The new Champions League format will see the number of total matches increase from 125 to 189 meaning each team will play a minimum of eight games instead of six and potential maximum a of 17. City will also compete in a new look Club World Cup that will increase the load of games players have to play. 'We're close ,' Rodri said.
'On the optimum number of games players should play he said: 'Between 40 and 50 is the amount of games in which a player can perform at the highest level. 'After that you drop because it is impossible to sustain the physical level.'This year we are maybe going to go until 70 or maybe 80. In my humble opinion, I think it is too much.'Someone has to take care of us because we are the main characters of this, sport, or business, whatever you want to call it.
