Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw, striker for Manchester City Women, has stepped away from the team for their League Cup semi-final against Arsenal following a barrage of racist and misogynistic abuse she faced online after their WSL match against Arsenal.
Manchester City Women striker Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw has withdrawn from the squad for their League Cup semi-final against Arsenal after facing racist and misogynistic abuse following their Women's Super League defeat to Arsenal last Sunday. Man City reported the abuse directed towards Shaw to the police, and Greater Manchester Police told Sky Sports News that their 'investigations are ongoing'.
Shaw's absence from Thursday's tie was attributed to her mental well-being, while City Football Club pledged full support to the striker over the 'disgusting treatment' she received in the aftermath of the 4-3 loss to the Gunners at the Joie Stadium. Shaw, who has scored an impressive 86 goals for the club, made her 100th City appearance when she came off the bench in the 66th minute of the WSL fixture. This was only her second outing since suffering an injury in early December. When asked by Sky Sports about Shaw's well-being following City's 2-1 victory over Arsenal, which secured their place in the Women's League Cup final, manager Gareth Taylor expressed his difficulty in assessing the situation. He stated, 'It's hard to say. We left yesterday and weren't able to bring her with us on the journey. 'It's really difficult for me to analyse because who knows what goes on in that world and when you're affected by things like that, it's really difficult. I've not really had time to have a good conversation with her about it but she knows, and needs to know, that the whole club are behind her in this.'In a statement released on Tuesday, Manchester City condemned the racist and misogynistic abuse Shaw had endured. They emphasized their zero-tolerance stance towards discrimination, both online and in stadiums, stating that it has 'absolutely no place' in or outside the game. Shaw, in her desire not to give publicity to the perpetrators, has chosen not to publicly share the messages she received. However, the club assured that the content had been shared with the authorities, and an investigation would follow. City expressed their unwavering support for Shaw, acknowledging the 'disgusting' treatment she had faced. The incident coincided with Chelsea captain Millie Bright experiencing expletive insults following their 1-0 win against Aston Villa. Bright took to social media to remind fans that players 'are not robots'. Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, also spoke about the abuse Shaw received, highlighting the pervasiveness of racism and misogyny in society. He stressed his support for Shaw and all individuals who experience abuse based on their race or gender. The Women's Professional Football League (WPFL) and the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) released statements condemning the abuse and offering support to both Shaw and Bright.
