Manchester City's Champions League journey will continue against Real Madrid in a high-stakes play-off tie. The dates and opponents for the round of 16 have also been revealed.
Manchester City's Champions League journey for the highly anticipated play-off clash with Real Madrid has been set. The Blues secured their spot against the Spanish giants in Friday's draw, marking their fourth consecutive season facing off against each other. City entered the draw knowing they would be pitted against either Madrid or Bayern Munich, having just squeezed into the top 24 qualification spots.
A dramatic comeback victory against Club Brugge on Wednesday night propelled City into the knockout rounds, but their finishing position of 22nd left them unseeded. Now, with the Real Madrid matchup confirmed, the dates for the two-legged tie are set. City will host Carlo Ancelotti's team in the first leg on Tuesday, February 11, with an 8pm kick-off. The return leg takes place in the Spanish capital on Wednesday, February 19, at 8pm. Should City successfully navigate their way through this two-legged play-off, they will advance to the last 16 of the competition, where they will face either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen. The draw for the last 16 will be conducted on February 21. Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, and Aston Villa are the eight teams already secured in the round of 16 hat, having finished in the top eight of the revamped 36-team league table.Reacting to the Real Madrid tie, Guardiola stated: 'It looks like a derby already, four years in a row facing Madrid. Madrid or Bayern, both were really tough, hopefully we can arrive in the first leg here and the next one in Madrid as best as possible.
