The Prime Minister was told to 'take Islamophobia seriously'

A Manchester MP has told Rishi Sunak to start taking Islamophobia seriously in a fiery exchange in Parliament. Afzal Khan accused Conservatives of peddling far-right conspiracy theories about Islamists and Muslims 'taking over Britain' at Prime Minister's Questions.

It comes after Lee Anderson, the party's former vice-chairman who this week defected to Nigel Farage's Reform UK, had the Tory whip removed due to comments he made about London mayor Sadiq Khan being controlled by 'Islamists'.

Responding, Mr Sunak said: "Discrimination has no place in our society. It's important to distinguish between strongly felt political debate on one hand and unacceptable acts of abuse, intimidation and violence on the other. I would urge him to wait for the details of the strategy.
