Trains are unable to leave Manchester Piccadilly, with disruptions expected into Saturday night.
Train services across the North West are facing major disruption due to "trespassers on the railway" in Manchester.
The first impacted train was a service at about 11:50 GMT and disruptions are expected to continue into Saturday night, Northern said"This issue has caused major congestion all around Manchester, we are trying to get it cleared as soon as possible," Northern said on X. "Officers attended alongside Greater Manchester Police, paramedics and fire and rescue, and a person was arrested in connection ."
Northern said tickets from impacted services could be used on Manchester Metrolink services between Manchester Airport and Manchester City Centre, in both directions, until further notice.
