'I've loved my time in Manchester. Whoever follows me as chief executive is inheriting an incredible role alongside a talented and dedicated leadership team'
Manchester town hall has confirmed chief executive Joanne Roney CBE is leaving after seven years to head up troubled Birmingham council. Having taken over from Sir Howard Bernstein in 2017, she is set to move to the newly-created post of managing director at the local authority in the West Midlands, returning to her hometown.
Ms Roney was awarded an OBE for her services to local government, as well as a CBE earlier this year. In a statement today , as the appointment was confirmed, she said: "I've loved my time in Manchester. It's a wonderful city and I'm proud of what - together with colleagues, partners and the city's political leadership - we've been able to achieve here.
The troubled local authority has seen a government-appointed commissioner to oversee its recovery. West Midlands bosses were impressed with Ms Roney's track record and see Manchester as a national success story. "As she would be the first to say, everything we do here is a team effort and she will leave behind a strong and talented management team with a clear vision of where the city is going, its strengths to be built upon and celebrated and the long-term challenges which we are addressing. It is, as ever, an exciting time in Manchester."
