Alfred Pomfret , an 87-year-old Manchester United fan, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on the way to a Europa League match against Glasgow Rangers on January 23rd. Alfred, a season ticket holder in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand at Old Trafford , attended every home game with his son, Graeme. The pair were in the stadium car park when Alfred collapsed. First responders and paramedics administered CPR and transported him to the Manchester Royal Infirmary, but he could not be revived.
The coroner's office attributed his death to natural causes. His family described Alfred as a loving husband and father, a hard-working man who enjoyed life, especially his beloved Manchester United. Graeme and Alfred's wife of 67 years, Josie, have both paid touching tributes to the devoted fan and family man. Alfred worked as an electrical engineer for the General Post Office (GPO) in Manchester before his retirement. He was known for his friendly and sociable nature, often helping out at his son's bakery in Glossop and being a regular at the local Partington Theatre. Alfred was also a wildlife enthusiast, a life member of the Wildlife Trust with Josie, regularly attending meetings. Graeme shared that Alfred was deeply passionate about Manchester United, attending Old Trafford for over 50 years, and they shared countless memories at every game, including cup finals. He further stated that Alfred always helped with his business and loved to enjoy life. Josie, deeply saddened by the sudden loss, mentioned how Alfred always waved goodbye with a 'godspeed' as they left for the match. This time, however, he didn't return. Graeme revealed that witnessing his father's collapse was incredibly traumatic, but he feels compelled to continue attending Old Trafford in Alfred's honor, keeping the 'red flag flying high'. Sunday's match against Crystal Palace marked Graeme's first return to the ground since the tragedy, a poignant reminder of the bond they shared
