Thousands gather to pay respects to the 'King of the Stretford End' at Old Trafford and Manchester Cathedral.
Despite overcast skies, occasional showers, and noticeably cool temperatures, Manchester residents, both those aligned with the red and light blue sides of the city's football divide, gathered in large numbers to bid farewell to the esteemed Denis Law. Thousands thronged to Old Trafford to offer their respects as the funeral procession made its solemn passage beneath the Trinity Statue before embarking on a 20-minute journey to Manchester Cathedral .
As the 'King of the Stretford End' paused by the now iconic statue depicting three United icons – Law, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton – the crowd erupted into restrained applause, with some discreetly reaching for handkerchiefs to dab away a tear or two. A poignant observation was made by a few that all three of these legendary players have now departed this earthly realm. Upon arrival at the Cathedral, Law and his family were met by another substantial gathering and the mournful strains of a lone piper. Law, undoubtedly a Manchester United legend, was also a towering figure in Scottish football. The service itself was a poignant blend of remembrance and celebration – a celebration of a truly exceptional footballer and a remarkably kind-hearted individual. Those who had the privilege of knowing him in Manchester consistently remarked on his impeccable gentlemanly conduct. Manchester Cathedral reverberated with the presence of 500 attendees, including former teammates like Brian Kidd and Alex Stepney, who recounted Law's astonishingly rapid football intellect and his remarkable goalscoring prowess. Peter Schmeichel and Bryan Robson shared their experiences of following in his illustrious footsteps. Members of the Manchester United Class of 2025 were also present, led by manager Ruben Amorim. Dressed impeccably in United suits, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire represented the current players and flanked Wayne Rooney into the Cathedral. Ruud van Nistelrooy, another Manchester United goalscoring giant alongside Law and Rooney, also came to pay his respects. The congregation listened attentively to readings and commemorations, the hymn 'Jerusalem,' and Psalm 23, 'The Lord is my shepherd,' along with a heartfelt tribute from Sir Alex Ferguson. As the service concluded, a truly heartwarming gesture unfolded as the congregation was treated to a recording of the song 'Angel' – an unlikely duet featuring Law and Sir Rod Stewart. The cathedral bells tolled 84 times, once for each year of Law's life, as the service concluded with final words from Sir Alex Ferguson. I inquired from him about the reasons behind Law's exceptional talent and enduring legacy at United, ending with a rhetorical question and an obvious statement: 'A proud Scot?' Sir Alex responded with a broad smile and a delightful chuckle. 'Oh yes, indeed, very proud,' he affirmed. A fitting tribute from one Scottish and Manchester United legend to another
