A public health expert said mandatory wearing of masks is the 'only option available', with the arrival of a new Covid-19 subvariant.
'The DoH [Department of Health] should not turn a blind eye to the fact that mandatory face masks is the only option we have given the low booster rate [and] that we have to open the economy,' Dr. Tony Leachon said in a Viber message to The Manila Times on Wednesday.'People need definitive solutions. We can't control mobility. But we can wear face masks conveniently to protect the people,' he added. On Tuesday, the Health department reported its first case of the Arcturus XBB.
16 Omicron subvariant of Covid-19, which Leachon said in a separate recorded video interview with the Times, originated from India and apart from the usual flu-like symptoms, also includes conjunctivitis or sore eyes. From April 17 to 23, the DoH reported a 32-percent increase in Covid-19 cases in the Philippines, which is 450 cases per day.Leachon warned that the positivity rate could still increase if the public does not adhere to minimum public health standards, which includes masking.
