The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick, the teams announced. Schenn won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.
Assessing Vancouver’s return
The Vancouver Canucks would’ve preferred better than a 2023 third-round pick in return for Schenn. The club had been trying, in fact, to fold him into larger deals that might’ve helped them clear money or in otherwise juiced the return. At the end of the day, a third-round pick is a roughly fair value and it’s a deal the Canucks had to make. The club now has seven draft picks in the first four rounds of the deep 2023 NHL Entry Draft, which is a decent position. —, a smooth, offensively-minded puck mover for Schenn, the kind of player who hits everything in sight, seems to be line with Kyle Dubas’ need to make his team more playoff-ready.
“There’s no reason for us to really beat around it. We’ve wanted to become more competitive,” Dubas said on Monday after tWhere Schenn fits with the Leafs remains to be seen, but he feels like the kind of defenseman who could work on the bottom pair, coming in and out of the lineup when needed. That he spent the first four seasons of his NHL career with the Leafs should undoubtedly help his acclimatization period.
