PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said there are more 'potential areas' the Philippines and Canada can explore 'to move further' in their bilateral relations.

The Chief Executive made the remark in response to Canadian Foreign Minister Mèlanie Joly who made a courtesy visit to Malacañang last Thursday.Joly, in their meeting, called on the Philippine government to support its free trade negotiations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, citing the importance of Asean Centrality, as Canada is looking to 'become a strategic partner' of the regional bloc.

Welcoming Joly's statement, Marcos said that there are many opportunities the two countries can identify 'as potential areas for us to be able to move further' while also expressing his administration's desire to pursue strategic partnership with Canada to further strengthen their bilateral ties. The Philippines and Canada are slated to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024.'On the issue of strategic partnership, I think it is something that certainly we can pursue.
