(UPDATE) PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered concerned government agencies to look into the findings of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (Cedaw), saying that the Philippines violated the rights of 'comfort women' or victims of sexual slavery committed by the Japanese Imperial Army in World War 2.
'While we maintain our previous position on the admissibility and merits of the case in view of national jurisprudence and treaty obligations, we recognize the grave atrocities endured by brave Filipino women during the wars of the 20th century, and sincerely commiserate with them as they bear the long-term and irreversible physical and psychological effects of the war,' Marcos said.
'Government agencies concerned are formulating a comprehensive response to the Cedaw Committee and will submit this within the required period,' Marcos said.'We commit to undertaking measures and finding ways to help them live better lives as an expression of our continued deep solidarity with them and of our utmost respect,' he added.
