PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. wants the Philippine Coast Guard to go beyond its sea rescue mission and maritime patrol duties to strengthen the country’s territorial defense, according to the presidential palace.
Mr. Marcos said many duties of the Philippine Navy have been transferred to the PCG but it remains a non-threatening unit as it is not technically part of the armed forces. The coast guard’s primary mandates include maritime search and rescue, maritime safety, marine environmental protection and maritime security.
