Marcus Semien is the closest thing we have to a modern-day iron man. He encapsulate the 'best ability is availability' trope. The 2023 All-Star thrives in a state of perpetual motion, which is funny, because he spent years on a quest for stability.
was in denial. This was spring training of 2017, an arbitration year and Semien’s chance to prove himself once and for all. Except the more he tried to push through the wrist injury and convince himself nothing was wrong, the more the pain throbbed.Texas RangersAt the time, doctors advised Semien could spend six weeks in a cast and hope for healing. But if that did not go well, he would need surgery. Semien opted for the operation — he’s not one for wasted time.
Wrist injury aside, Semien has had only one close call — yes, knock on wood — with the injured list. That came in 2020, when nagging soreness in his side ended a streak of 276 consecutive games played, the second-longest mark in A’s history. Semien likely would have been placed on the IL if the team hadn’t had to spend five days in quarantine because of positive COVID-19 tests.
More than a year later, he is making good on his contract, playing well and, of course, playing every … single … day.
