The trio reportedly sailed off on March 31 from Polowat Atoll in a “small 20-foot open skiff with an outboard motor” toward their destination Pikelot Atoll — located approximately 100 nautical miles northwest from their sailing origin — and had prior “experience navigating these waters,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in their release.
JRSC Guam watchstanders then coordinated a search and rescue operation for the mariners that spanned “over 78,000 square nautical miles.” However, they faced several challenges “mobilizing” U.S. Coast Guard air assets for the search due to availability and weather conditions.A day after the mariner’s location was initially pinpointed on April 7, a U.S.
The aircrews then “deployed survival packages” to the men to help “sustain” them until further help could arrive.
