Mark Allen was beaten 6-5 by Barry Hawkins in the semi-finals of the UK Championship, with the Northern Irishman accused of 'sabotaging' himself during the match
Northern Irish snooker star Mark Allen faced accusations of self-sabotage after his UK Championship semi-final loss to Barry Hawkins.
Snooker legend Steve Davis, working for the BBC, suggested that Allen's deliberate slow pace could have contributed to his defeat. While appearing on punditry duty, Davis observed the negative impact that both players' lack of speed might have had on their game.
"The first person who gets a bit of distance in this match might start to relax, I don't think either player is really relaxed out there," he added. "I got what I deserved in the end. I didn't take advantage of the chances I had, and I had quite a few. It's agonising because I got so close, despite playing poorly," admitted Allen. "Barry was the better player tonight. Only my grit and determination gave me a chance towards the end, but the right person won.
