Lawrenson had spent three decades on the BBC Sport team before being let go this summer
Mark Lawrenson claimed he was made to leave the BBC at least in part because he is '65 and a white male'.
In an interview with the Sunday Times published today, the ex-Liverpool and Preston North End star suggested his age and skin colour were the main reason behind his departure. Discussing his exit, and previous experiences at the BBC, Lawrenson criticised what he described as “woke” attitudes within the corporation, particularly from younger editors as well as the way he was let go."The Beeb are probably the worst at giving you bad news,” he told the ST.
He described a “very early woke” moment at the BBC in 1997 when he was co-commenting at Bradford City after the death of Princess Diana. “The editor of the programme said, ‘Any free-kicks around the penalty area tonight, please don’t mention the wall,” Lawrenson added.
