Lucy Aston, Martin Clunes's first wife, has spoken out about the painful comment she believes led to their divorce in 1997. The former couple's marriage crumbled after a heated argument at a Chinese restaurant, fueled by Martin's rising acting career and Lucy's decision to pursue education.
Martin Clunes's first wife, Lucy Aston , has publicly shared what she claims was the hurtful remark that led to the demise of their marriage. The former couple, who tied the knot in 1990, found their relationship crumbling just three years later following a heated argument at a Chinese restaurant. \Lucy recounted to The Mirror that cracks in their union began to appear as Martin's acting career soared while she continued working in a food shop.
A significant point of contention arose when Lucy discovered that Martin had 'forgotten' to include her in an invitation to a party. She alleged that during a subsequent argument, Martin labeled her 'dull and boring' for choosing to study to become a crisis counsellor over their usual nights out. \Lucy stated that the final straw came during their restaurant dispute when Martin purportedly said, 'You are an embarrassment.' Overwhelmed by anger, she declared, 'No more,' stood up, and announced, 'Thanks for dinner - this is the end.' before abruptly leaving. She recounted driving away in a state of fury, later returning to find Martin surrounded by takeout containers from their meal. She then removed her wedding ring, slammed it on the table, and departed, concluding that their marriage was irrevocably over. They officially divorced in 1997, with Martin marrying Philippa Braithwaite later that year. They have remained together ever since
