Scam calls seem to be relentless nowadays, and with technology improving so quickly, it's no surprise they can cause misery on such a large scale.
EXERCISE CAUTION: Martin Lewis was targeted by a scam caller saying they were from HMRC - and warned people not to call back under any circumstances
Martin Lewis has warned the public to 'exercise caution' and 'not engage' with phone scammers after playing along with a fraudster posing as the HMRC who targeted him. The MoneySavingExpert founder received a call from an automated system pretending to be the HMRC , prompting him to press the number 1, which he did to see what would happen.
Speaking to his Twitter followers, Martin said when he answered the initial call, he was greeted by an electronic voice with a US accent telling him he 'hadn't replied to a letter' and 'legal action was being started'. It told him to 'press 1 to urgently speak to an agent'.
"However, if you call them or if you click to call back after they've left a voicemail or from a missed call, you may be charged a premium rate. So the best thing, if you're in any doubt, is exercise caution and not engage.
