The Money Saving Expert has issued a warning to all homeowners across the UK who are looking to challenge their council tax band as it could backfire on them
Money-saving guru Martin Lewis is sounding the alarm to UK households that they could be due for a hefty council tax refund. Despite his long-standing efforts to raise awareness, property valuations for council tax purposes have remained static since 1991 across England and Scotland. This oversight could mean countless residents are overpaying, potentially by thousands.
In a revealing segment on The Martin Lewis Money Show Live aired on ITV1 and ITVX, Martin advised viewers: "These are the checks you need to do. The check and challenge system is my system, it is not an official system, this is my way to give you a level of safety." The money-saving expert has come through with some stellar advice for homeowners. He suggested, "If it looks like you're in a higher band than many of your neighbours in similar homes, the second check, which can't be used in evidence, is your safety check." Talking about property value assessments, he revealed, "What was your house worth in 1991? Because it is still those 1991 prices that dictate what band you are in.
