Financial guru Martin Lewis shares strategies to minimize the impact of projected water bill increases, emphasizing water meter usage and contacting suppliers for support.
Martin Lewis has provided valuable advice on mitigating the predicted £123 increase in water bills by 2025/26, taking into account the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation for that period. The renowned BBC podcaster and Money Saving Expert founder emphasized a key strategy: 'Do you have more or the same number of bedrooms in your house than people? So three bedrooms, two people, you would say yes.
Because water bills are based on the value of your house, the rateable value, so the bigger it is, the more you'll pay, whereas meters depend on how much you use.' He further elaborated, 'The less people, the less you use.' To counter this anticipated rise, Martin recommends exploring the option of a water meter, as detailed by MoneySavingExpert (MSE) online. 'If you live in England or Wales and there are more bedrooms in your home than people, getting a free water meter could help you save £100s as you only pay for what you use instead of a fixed amount.' MSE advises visiting your provider's website to apply for a water meter or contacting them directly. Additional tips include requesting an 'assessed charge bill', checking eligibility for a sewerage rebate, and consciously reducing water consumption, as reported by Birmingham Live. Recognizing the financial challenges some may face, MSE offers crucial advice: 'Struggling to pay? Contact your supplier. All companies offer some kind of support – this can be anything from providing repayment plans, discounts or even a cap on how much you pay.' He also underscored a significant economic benefit: 'Remember, it doesn't just cut the amount of water you use, but so much of the water we use is heated that it cuts your energy use too...' Elaborating on this point during a recent segment of his ITV programme, Martin added: 'If you're on a water meter you get the double saving.
