It’s all part of the ‘Downshift Challenge’, which sees families making a switch on certain products to save cash. The ‘Downshift Challenge’ involves going down a brand level on whatever you usually buy in a supermarket. Instead of going for Heinz baked beans, for example, switch to the supermarket's own brand. This, Martin says, could save you money and doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be compromising on quality.‘Don't believe the hype. Supermarkets say finest – or costliest – is best.

Finally, at the lower end of the supermarket spectrum are the ‘basic’ products, and Martin says its ‘presentation is deliberately stark to imply it’s cut back to the bones’. By making savings on cereals, basics, pasta and fruit and veg, Alexandra got her weekly shop to £13.62, and found there was ‘virtually no difference in taste’ for cheaper products such as tuna and own brand Weetabix.

Make it fun – ‘It’s far better to taste with your mouth than your eyes’, says Martin, ‘so try giving family members a blind taste test, with no packaging to ensure it's fair.’
