MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis has warned that a DWP rule has left claimants 'devastated' and treated 'like criminals'
Martin Lewis has sounded the alarm on a "fundamentally unjust" DWP rule that he says treats claimants "like criminals".
One carer was left "devastated", according to Lewis, after being ordered to repay £20,000 in Carer's Allowance for unintentionally surpassing the earnings threshold. Lewis branded the "old-fashioned, unjust" system as urgently needing reform and detailed the earnings limits that beneficiaries must be aware of.Speaking to MoneySavingExpert, Mr Lewis said: "Earn £151 a week or less, and those eligible can claim the £81.90 per week allowance.
"Many on Carer's Allowance need to restrict any working hours to avoid hitting it , yet if their wage increases slightly, eg, when the annual minimum wage increases, they can fractionally bust the threshold. If that happens, the terrible disconnectedness and poor benefits systems mean they're often still paid the allowance for months, or even years.
