Scammers have been using Martin Lewis' name to steal millions of pounds
Martin Lewis, Taylor Swift, Elon Musk and Adele are among the high-profile figures whose profiles have been frequently misused in scam adverts, according to an analysis of Action Fraud data by MoneySavingExpert.com. The website examined how often these public figures were mentioned in scams reported in 2022 and 2023.
According to MoneySavingExpert, Action Fraud data shows that victims have reported losing over £20 million to scams misusing Mr Lewis's profile in the past two years, with the largest individual reported loss attributed to a scam featuring Mr Lewis being £500,000. He continued: "The new Government has promised to ensure that tech companies have a clear obligation, and a clear financial incentive, to work with banks to prevent scams, identify fraudulent transactions and support victims. We'll be watching closely to see if it delivers."
If individuals suspect they've been scammed, they're advised to contact their bank and the police immediately.
